England has a lot to offer for a great family holiday and if you live here, then you can avoid the hassle of airports with the kids! Short breaks can give you some real quality time with the family or just an escape from the stresses of every day life - you don't need to go far and the UK has many "hidden" gems. Plus, due to our unpredictable weather, it is geared up towards wet weather - often abroad if it rains there is absolutely nothing to do.

holidays in the uk - england - recommended regions to visit

South West England - Devon, Cornwall, Dorset & Somerset are probably the most popular holiday region in the UK with its better weather, stunning coastline & lush countryside. You might like to visit some of the popular resorts on the coast such as Newquay, Woolacombe or Salcombe for example. There are plenty of holiday parks at the coast, often even right on the beach, but if you travel inland 5 minutes, you can come across some gorgeous cottages. Southern England runs from Hampshire & the New Forest in the west, to a quick hop over to the Isle of Wight, on to Sussex & Hastings for example right across to Kent in the east. Again, the focus here is on the coast with loads of holiday parks & lodges in the area but also lots of activities on offer such as walking, cycling & watersports perhaps. Don't forget, Kent is the gateway to France, so you could always go on a day trip if you fancy it. Just outside London there are the popular tourist destinations of Chessington Park , Legoland and Thorpe Park - RFH offers packages through our partners that give entry to the parks plus accommodation either onsite or in local hotels.

The East of England including Norfolk, Suffolk & Essex is a less well known tourist destination & therefore holiday cottages are often better value than the more popular regions in the South. Suffolk is one of my favourite counties to holiday with the kids - it is close to where I live in Northamptonshire, but also offers great cycling for my husband & kids - I just meet them at the end of their bike ride in the nearest pub - most of which seem to have a playground & real ale, so you too, can have happy kids & a happy husband!

Peak District & Lincolnshire are slightly further north & west to Norfolk. You have Lincolnshire on the coast & inland is the Peak District that covers both Derbyshire & Staffordshire. Again, a region we have visited as a family - I can heartily recommend Darwin Forest in the Derbyshire Peak District - the accommodation in holiday lodges / log cabins was lovely, the indoor pool a bonus & there were loads of activities onsite for the kids whilst we relaxed. Not only that, there was a lovely bar/restaurant onsite that also offered take away so I only cooked when I felt like it!

The Cotswolds & the Heart of England such as Oxfordshire, Derbyshire, Herefordshire & the other Welsh border county of Shropshire is just south of the Peak District. This is a very popular region of England for short breaks probably as it is so accessible from London. The region is known for its quintessentially English villages. It is also home to the now famous Cotswolds Water Park that is popular for its onsite luxury accommodation, facilities & activities. RFH have teamed up with another specialist in the area to provide with a choice of "the best of the best", Manor Cottages .

Cumbria & the Lake District are further north on the western side of England - a region famous for its lakes such as Lake Winderemere but also a popular holiday destination, not just with walkers. Yorkshire is on the eastern side of northern England and covers the largest area of England. It is made up of several National Parks. Northumberland on the rugged North East Coast and many people visit this region on their way to Scotland.
